About the event
Please note this is an event for our Nature Girls group, find out more about the group here. All other general beaver walks can be found on our events page.
Beavers were hunted to extinction in Northamptonshire around 400 years ago but are now back, thanks to this exciting reintroduction project in the Nene Wetlands nature reserve.
Known as 'habitat engineers' because of their ability to change their environment to better suit their needs (improving it for other wildlife in the process), they have already had a significant impact within their 18 hectare enclosure.
Join us on this 'small group' tour into the enclosure (usually out of bounds to the public) and get a fascinating glimpse into the hidden world of our beaver family.
We will meet at the visitor centre for refreshments and a brief talk about the history of beavers in Britain, the impact they can have on freshwater habitats and how we brought beavers back to the Nene Valley. We'll then head into the beaver enclosure itself to see what they've been up to. We will finish the walk by spending a bit of time looking for the beavers themselves as they emerge for the evening. However, please note that they are very unpredictable and therefore we are unable to guarantee sightings.
Please be aware that we will be walking approximately 1-2 miles through the beaver enclosure where the ground may be wet and uneven and the vegetation may be long. Therefore a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required and we highly recommend that you wear closed in boots/shoes, long trousers and sleeves and wear insect repellent.
This event is scheduled to run for 2 hours, however, it does occasionally overrun.
Who are the Northants Nature Girls?
This is a group designed for all women (including trans, intersex and non-binary people) who love nature and the outdoors to meet like minded people, whilst enjoying time in nature. Most people attend these events alone, and is a great way to get chatting to some fellow nature lovers. Can't join us this time? We will be hosting monthly meetings throughout the year so keep your eyes peeled! We have also recently expanded to include events in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
You can also join our Facebook group here, to connect with others and hear about upcoming events. You can also join our Whatsapp Community - please email Megan.Owen@wildlifebcn.org if you'd like to join.
Please note places are non-refundable unless the event or activity is cancelled by the Trust. Click here for event terms and conditions.
