Event details
About the event
This is a joint walk with Hunts Fauna and Flora Society and will be led by Eamonn Lawlor, Senior Reserves Officer, the Wildlife Trust BCN. Join us to see the unusual flora and fauna of this rare example of a meadow on calcareous clay in Huntingdonshire. The geology of Woodwalton Marsh SSSI supports an unusual flora including dropwort, pyramidal orchids and the scarce sulphur clover. The site is very sheltered and supports a range of butterflies including marbled white, ringlet and grizzled skipper. Lizards can often be seen basking on the multitude of large anthills. The walk will continue to Gamsey Wood which is an ancient woodland, similar in structure and species composition to Lady’s Wood and Raveley Wood and is a County Wildlife Site. It is believed to have been a part of the larger ancient forest which covered this area in Saxon times.
