Luton & Beds Youth Rangers in Luton (River Lea conservation)
Event details
About the event
During this Youth Ranger session, for anyone living in Luton or Bedfordshire who is aged 12-18yrs old, we will be helping to improve one of the River Lea's tributary's, Lewsey Brook. We will be removing the invasive species himalayan balsam and clearing any blockages in this brook. There will also be a chance to explore the meadow areas of this green space, and some rarer floral species found here.
These monthly sessions provide opportunities for meeting other young people interested in the natural environment, learning new skills, as well as exploring a variety of green spaces across Bedfordshire. This is a great chance to learn about River Lea- a unique and rare habitat in Luton, and our conservation efforts to protect the health of this chalk stream.
We will be pulling the Himalayan balsam from the banks of the river, but will also be working on the brook which is currently dry, but with some wetter parts along the brook. The work will be on some steeper river banks, may involve uneven ground and walking through water. If you have any concerns or questions regarding accessibility, please get in touch.
Refreshments and safety gloves will be provided to all those attending the session. Please dress for the weather and wear wellington boots if you have got a pair. We do have some wellington boots available, so get in touch if you wish to borrow a pair for the task. We recommend wearing long trousers and long sleeved shirt/jacket as there are long grass on the banks, as well as stinging nettles growing alongside.
No experience is required just some enthusiasm and willingness to join in!
We will meet at the far end of the car park at Lewsley Park for 10 AM start.
