What if the green spaces we pass every day could become thriving homes for wildlife—and more inviting places for people too? This summer, we have been exploring sites across Luton to discover where simple, practical changes could give nature more room to flourish.
The surveys are part of Luton’s involvement in the Nature Towns and Cities programme, which helps towns and cities put nature at the heart of local plans. Building on our previous work with the council, we looked closely at the habitats on each site—their type, condition and potential—and considered where improvements could make the biggest difference for biodiversity.
One exciting opportunity is the green corridor of grasslands and hedgerows along Bramingham Road and Wauluds Bank Drive. Winding through residential neighbourhoods in north-west Luton, the corridor already contains valuable pockets for wildlife, including a District Wildlife Site. Alongside them are closely mown areas that could offer much more for nature.
