About the event

Come and see how this incredible chalk grassland nature reserve comes alive after dark. Staff and local experts will help you use all your senses to discover this reserve in a brand new way. 

Along the way we will be looking for bats and identifying moths, and hopefully we will see some glow worms too.

Itinerary for the evening:

8:30-9:00pm Arrival on site

9:00-9:30 pm Hot drinks, fire pit (to toast marshmallows), crafts activity for kids

9:30-10.15 pm Guided walk around Totternhoe nature reserve by experienced Wildlife Trust staff to spot nocturnal creatures- bats and glow worms. We will use bat detectors to help us locate bats living on this site.  

10:15-11:00 pm After the walk, we will meet experts from moth recording group and explore the wide variety of moths living on Totternhoe.

Additional information: 

  • This event is open to all. There is no age restriction and it is up to parents discretion. However, we would suggest the minimum age for attending is 10 years old.
  • Please note, the parking will be available on site. More details on how to find us and where to park will be sent via e-mail prior to the event.
  • This event is weather dependent and may be cancelled at short notice.
  • Please note, there are no toilet facilities on this nature reserve.

What to bring

Please dress appropriately for the weather bearing in mind that it will get chilly after dusk. Long-sleeves and long trousers will protect against bites, stings and scratches. Please be aware that this chalk reserve can become slippery when wet so sensible shoes/boots are a must. Please bring along your own torch, if possible (we have some spare if needed).
