Event details
About the event
The Youth Rangers is a monthly programme for 12-17 year olds, which enables those taking part to explore various nature reserves and green spaces, to learn new skills and make new friends.
April Youth Rangers Meet-Up: Testing Water Quality
Join us for our April session at Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve, located in the heart of the Flit Valley and cared for by our colleagues at The Greensand Trust.
During this session, we will be testing water quality in the River Flit and learning about riverfly monitoring.
Our Conservation Officer will demonstrate how to collect a kick sample, after which we will analyse what we find. We’ll identify freshwater invertebrates in our samples and explore what their presence tells us about water quality.
We will also:
- Learn how to test for additional water quality indicators and signs of pollution
- Discuss invasive plant species found along the riverbanks
What to expect:
- Monitoring work (all tools and equipment provided)
- Drinks and snacks during the session
- The opportunity to learn practical water quality testing methods
- A chance to meet like-minded young people and make a positive difference outdoors
Please be aware that there may be slippery or muddy paths near the lakes and river. We recommend wearing wellies or sturdy footwear.
The session will include some stationary activity while analysing water samples (standing around a table).
For any enquiries regarding accessibility, please contact Ieva.
Meeting Point:
We will meet at the far end of the car park (where the path begins towards the Riverside Café) for a 10:00am start.

From there, we will walk to the testing site near the River Flit. The session will finish at 12:30pm, and we will return to the car park.
Please note that car park charges apply, including for drop-off and pick-up. We encourage lift sharing where possible.
Parents are welcome to stay for the duration of the session and explore the nature reserve while supporting the important conservation work of The Greensand Trust. There is also a lovely on-site café — perfect for enjoying a mindful break surrounded by beautiful views.
