Come along and learn to scythe as part of the Farming for the Future project and to celebrate National Meadows Day!

About the event

The Learn to Scythe course will be run by scythe trainer, Nicole Clough, the scything association regional coordinator in the Midlands, with years of mowing experience and teaching.

The course is a practical one-day course, with a choice of dates, and participants will learn by doing. It is suitable for a range of experience levels, from complete beginners to those looking to improve their scything skills.

The course will cover:

  • Setting up and understanding the Austrian scythe;
  • Effective mowing techniques which are kind to both the user and the kit;
  • Sharpening and maintenance techniques, to include demonstration of peening the blade using a jig.

What to bring

The course will be held outside, therefore suitable clothing, weather protection and footwear is essential. Work gloves are also advised.

Tea, coffee and cake will be provided but please bring your own lunch.
