My week with the Wildlife Trust BCN
Recently I was picked for a work experience group to learn about different jobs at the Wildlife Trust BCN and what it’s really about.
While I was at the Wildlife Trust I did a drone survey with Josh, GIS mapping with Caitlin, interviewed a few staff members with different roles and met Brian (the CEO) at the invertebrate workshop.
I enjoyed meeting the Rangers and looking up the moths in the books from the moth traps. My favourite moths were the jersey tiger and the large yellow underwing.
On the invertebrate workshop for young people, I learnt how to identify grasshoppers/crickets, moths and spiders such as the crab spider.
When I grow up, I would love to become a Ranger as my dream job. It really helped meeting the rangers so I could see what they do and how they got their job.
A comment from Communities and Education Officer, Rebecca Neal
In the Cambourne area, we offer work experience to two or three local young people each year (only during the summer holidays). Young people must demonstrate their interest in conservation, usually through being a Wildlife Trust BCN Youth Ranger, or Junior Wildlife Ambassador. If you are interested, please email rebecca.neal@wildlifebcn.org
Here are a few additional activities, not mentioned by Ella, that the work experience students took part in this year:
- A butterfly survey on Cambourne nature reserve
- A family session doing bug hunting and a nature walk at Waresley and Gransden Woods nature reserve
- A volunteer work party in Cambridge, pulling up invasive species of plants
