About the event

This is part of a series of collaborative events between Village Farm with Tom and Lisa Martin, and the Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs and Northants.

Tom Martin is an innovative famer who balances managing his land with a sensitively for wildlife, trialling ways to farm more sustainably, and connecting with people about the joys and challenges of food production in the UK. His passion has taken him on the BBC's Countryfile, and led him to share his life on social media with thousands of followers. Tom manages Village Farm with his wife Lisa

In this event, we'll take an early morning walk on their working farm with a focus on listening for bird song. For those that want them, we'll give tips on identifying birds, but you may wish to just soak up the atmosphere. Along the way we'll talk about how a farm can be profitable and still consider wildlife and long-term environmental impacts. We'll walk 2-3 miles at a gentle pace around field edges and over stiles. At the end of the walk, we'll have a cuppa and they'll be time for more questions, and a walk around Lisa's Village Farm community veg garden.

These walks are aimed at adults, but interested older teenagers are welcome.

Mobility

This is a working farm and we will be walking field edges which may be muddy and uneven, and climbing over stiles. We aim to make our events programme as accessible as possible and are happy to make reasonable adjustments to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy our activities. Please contact us to discuss your accessibility needs.

What to bring

To avoid bites, stings and scratches, long sleeves and long trousers are suggested for all participants. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy, and sturdy shoes. The walk will go ahead even if it rains, so you may require waterproofs. It is unlikely, but if it is especially windy or lightening is forecast, it may not be advisable to run the session. If this happens, we will let you know as soon as possible and refund your money.
