About the event

The National Trust have ambitious plans to expand their famous Wicken Fen reserve. One of their first acquisitions is Burwell Fen, which they have been returning to nature for some time.  As summer approaches the Fen should be home to a good variety of waders and wildfowl who are settling down to breed. Skylarks, Kestrels and Barn Owls should be amongst the other birds on show, with terns and grebes a possibility. Hares and Roe Deer may be visible, as well as the Konig ponies and Highland cattle that help the Trust to manage the Fen.  The walk is around 3.5 miles in length and is on fairly level ground, though walking boots are advised, especially if wet, as there is some long grass. Parking is limited so, as ever, we will be meeting in Ely to car share.
