Help us protect and restore Flitwick Moor for wildlife and people

Flitwick Moor SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), in central Bedfordshire, is a special place – it’s one of the most important areas for wildlife in the county, with a truly fascinating history. It is a wetland nature reserve with a mix of fen, meadow, wet woodland and fragile peaty soils that support a wide range of flora and fauna including ten species of Sphagnum moss and rare birds such as the lesser spotted woodpecker.

However, as the site becomes more difficult to access and manage due to the effects of increased flooding, this precious habitat is at risk of declining in condition. This is why we need to undertake restoration work to ensure this nationally important habitat is protected.

We can tackle these issues by creating access to the remote parts of the site, to allow traditional management practices such as grazing to take place. We need to carry out urgent flood defence and channel repair work, to divert flood water from entering sensitive habitats. And to prevent increased soil erosion and stop further damage, we also need to manage access by undertaking work such as installing boardwalks and improving signage.

Here’s how your donation could help…

£30 could pay for the tools needed to carry out channel repairs
£54 could pay for a metre of new boardwalk to be installed on eroded pathways
£94 could fund a staff member to install new boardwalk and repair footpaths
£188 could pay for new flood defences, preventing further damage to habitat
£250 could help fund a new cattle pen on the site, improving the grazing infrastructure

We need to urgently raise £7,800 to fund vital work at Flitwick Moor for the next six months. By making a donation today, you will be helping keep this site in the best condition.
