Illustrated talk by Professor Tim Sparks on 'Phenology' - the study of seasonal changes in plants and animals from year to year.
Tim Sparks is Professor in Environmental Change at Coventry University. His interest in phenology developed and this led to a rediscovery of the ‘Marsham’ records. Robert Marsham was an English naturalist and the first to record the effects of nature and seasonal change. Tim re-established a UK phenology network in 1998 (Nature's Calendar) and designed the 'speed of spring' scheme on BBC Springwatch. In this talk he will highlight some of the changes that have occurred in our seasons, and discuss the influence of a warming climate on these. The areas studied are wide ranging - as diverse as ice-melt, bear hibernation, bird migration, insect flight, plant flowering and lawn cutting.
