As a belated New Year resolution, I’m trying to get out for a walk at lunchtimes. We need to remind ourselves occasionally what we are working for. And it’s not all about rare and threatened species - recent history teaches us that it’s hard work to keep common species common. The Wildlife Trust does do that, too.

The Wildlife Trust has for years recognised that good conservation depends on good science. We also know that the Wildlife Trust movement has unique strengths in giving people first-hand contact with wildlife - partly because almost everyone lives near one of our reserves, partly because our staff and volunteers are so inspiring. I think this is a good time of year to reflect on how the two interact.

Since my last blog entry I had the privilege of representing The Wildlife Trusts nationally, at the launch of the Climate Change Risk Assessment at the Royal Society in London. Please don’t stop reading because you find climate change boring, or too depressing… it gets better…

The New Year is a time to reflect and plan. Looking back at 2011, the Trust is in very good shape despite the economic turmoil all around us, thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers together.

"I’m a lifelong wildlife fan – I barely have memories before I was interested in wildlife - and there are some wonderful and contrasting landscapes for people to explore in our area."

Garden Friends Over the last few weeks farmers around our region have been suffering from soaring numbers of aphids in their cereal and potatoe crops. Reports say that the pest population has been boosted by a very warm spring and early summer and the limited natural enemy success in the early part of the season.

The Great Emergence! Burnet moths are now on the wing. The papery cocoons that we saw on the grasses are now empty, although you can see the black shell of the pupa that the adult moth has emerged from. These day-flying moths seem to be everywhere in The Wildlife Trust office garden, flying around, feeding from the flowers and...err...mating. Their metallic colouring looks fantastic in the sunshine and makes for some good photo opportunities.
