Event details

Wed, 26/10/2016 - 7:30pm - 9:30pm

In her latest book, Spirals in Time, as featured on BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week, Cambridge marine biologist Dr Helen Scales uncovers the secret lives of the animals that make sea shells (the molluscs), from snails that 'fly' underwater to octopuses accused of stealing shells from other animals and sailing around in them like little boats. Helen's book also ponders how people have used seashells for millennia. Shells were the first jewellery and among the oldest currencies, not to mention powerful symbols of sex and death, prestige and war. For this talk, Helen will dive into the fascinating world of shells and molluscs and reveal some of the journeys she went on as she charted their course through human lives and the ocean depths. Helen will be signing copies of her book after the talk, and copies will also be available to buy.
